The key problem everyone jokes about is a real problem.
Every church has the same three: the key situation (decades of copies, former members and past staff included, with rekeying the only fix and never in the budget), the unlock ministry (a trustee or volunteer driving over to open up for every group, renter, and repair visit), and the empty-building guilt — a facility that could serve or earn all week, sitting dark because access is the bottleneck.
The rentals question is the one with money attached. Churches everywhere quietly rent to smaller congregations, recovery groups, preschools, recitals, and receptions — or would, if hosting didn't mean a volunteer on both ends of every booking. Your building's empty hours are a mission asset and a revenue line; today they're locked behind the effort of unlocking them.
And there's the room everyone is rightly careful about: the children's wing. Check-in security is standard practice now; tying it to the doors themselves — so the wing operates on its own rules during services and stays sealed otherwise — mostly isn't. It should be.
Rules for a building that serves all week
if rental.paid → fellowship hall code works Sat 2–8 PM
if thursday.group → side door opens 6:45–9:30, every week
if member.departs → access removed everywhere, no rekeying
if kids.wing → locked outside services, check-in verified during
if rental.begins −1h → HVAC on, lights on, ready
if door.left.open → text the trustee on duty, with camera clip
